What is Dry Mouth in a drug test?

Dry Mouth is a term used to describe a donor who was unable to produce enough saliva during the collections process for an oral fluid drug test. When a donor claims to have a dry mouth and say they cannot produce enough saliva, the collector should give the donor 8 oz of water to drink or rinse their mouth. The donor is not required to drink the water or rinse their mouth. Following a 10-minute wait period, the collector will attempt to collect an initial oral fluid specimen.

If the donor is unable to produce the required amount of saliva after 2 failed collection attempts, the collector should officially start the procedures for Dry Mouth, including putting the donor in an area where they can be supervised and giving the donor up to 40 oz of water to drink or rinse their mouth. The donor has up to 1-hour from the second failed collection attempt to provide a sufficient oral fluid specimen.
