Breath Alcohol Technician (BAT) training certifies a student as proficient on a particular breath alcohol testing instrument.
A BAT certificate qualifies an individual to perform DOT alcohol testing using the instrument on which they are certified. The BAT certificate should specify the specific breath tester on which that individual was trained, such as RBT IV, Alcomonitor CC, etc. Very occasionally a BAT might be certified on more than one instrument during one class, and so might have more than one instrument listed on a certificate.
Before a BAT can use a different model of breath alcohol testing device to perform DOT alcohol testing the individual must be certified on the device. That means going through hands-on training as how to conduct breath testing with the device, learning to respond to the prompts and error messages, demonstrating proficiency by conducting seven error-free mock tests, and learning to perform Accuracy Checks and Calibration Adjustments if appropriate. At the successful conclusion of training the instructor will issue another BAT certificate listing the new instrument on which the individual is certified.
