Questions from our Mailbag

Q.  Do our BAT and Collector certifications need to be posted for the patients to see, or do they just need to be posted somewhere in the clinic, or do they even have to be posted at all?

A.  There is no requirement that the certificates be “posted”; however, you must have your proof of training available to show, if asked. Some facilities post the staff’s certificates, and others put them all in a binder in sheet protectors near the testing area and show them if requested.

Q.  I have some fellow employees who need to repeat their Specimen Collector training because of the 5 year time re-training requirement.  Do they only do the written test or do they also need to do mock collections also?

A.  Refresher training for Specimen Collectors must include training on the knowledge components, such as proper completion of the CCF and how to handle problem collections, as well as demonstration of proficiency by completing mock collections.

Q.  Where can I find answers to questions about DOT drug and alcohol testing?

A.  AlcoPro maintains a searchable knowledgebase that includes the entire DOT Part 40 regulations.  To research the question above about training requirements for collectors, for example, enter “training AND refresher” (without the quotation marks) to see a list of all items that contain both words.
