What is a “passive” alcohol test?

Passive alcohol tests measure alcohol in the air, which may come from an open beer can or the exhaled breath of an intoxicated person. Passive alcohol testing instruments use a fan to pull in the air to be measured for alcohol.  Passive alcohol tests can detect the presence of alcohol in a person’s breath, but cannot necessarily measure a person’s intoxication level.
