BAT Training and STT Training – What’s the Difference?

BAT Training and STT Training  –  What’s the Difference?

The curriculum for training BATs and STTs is almost identical.  Both curriculums include a knowledge component that covers the DOT alcohol test protocol (units one through seven of the model BAT curriculum), and both have a hands-on component that requires the student to demonstrate proficiency using the device on which they are training.  The significant difference is that STTs are not trained on confirmation test procedures, as it is not possible to perform a confirmation test using an Alcohol Screening Device.

Because the knowledge component of BAT training encompasses everything included in STT training, an individual who is certified as a BAT does not need to repeat the knowledge component of STT training prior to using an Alcohol Screening Device.  However, the BAT must receive training in how to use the device and demonstrate proficiency in using the device, just as an STT would, prior to performing DOT alcohol testing with the device.  The STT curriculum requires five error-free mock collections to demonstrate proficiency.

AlcoPro offers low-cost STT course materials to assist in training STTs and BATs to use the Alco-Screen 02 saliva alcohol test and the Q.E.D. saliva alcohol test.  Click here to learn more about STT training resources.
